You might be wondering what to expect from an exercise physiology assessment, or even
asking yourself “what can an exercise physiologist even do to help me?!”
Accredited Exercise physiologists (AEP) are university-qualified allied health professionals specialising in creating and delivering safe and effective exercise interventions. Accredited Exercise Physiologists are experts in exercise and its impact on the human body, and are best equipped to prescribe exercise as medicine. Programs and exercises are prescribed and individually designed to meet your specific needs, whether you are living with one or multiple injuries, chronic conditions and/or disabilities.
Exercise isn’t just about staying fit, Exercise is Medicine! It’s a vital tool for preventing,
managing and treating a wide range of health conditions including heart disease, diabetes,
mental health disorders, and many types of cancers.
What does an initial appointment with an Exercise Physiologist typically involve?
The initial assessment with our Exercise Physiologists is a chance for us to get to know you,
your goals, your concerns, and capacities. This typically involves an in-depth chat, followed
by a few assessments to see how you are moving, your current capacity and response to
exercise to not only ensure your safety to engage in exercise, but also to assist us in
developing an appropriate plan. Finally, we will develop a plan together to determine the
appropriate course of treatment.
After the initial appointment, what can I expect for ongoing sessions with an Exercise Physiologist?
It depends! The treatment plan is individualised to your needs, conditions and goals, and
may include a combination of 1:1 in-person treatment, in a supervised group setting in our
clinic, or at home.
Subsequent 1:1 Exercise Physiology Appointments are typically completed entirely in our
in-clinic gym space where we have access to a range of equipment we can use, depending
on your needs and treatment goals, including:
- Free weights including Dumbbells and Kettlebells
- Multi-station with adjustable pin-loaded weights and variety of attachments
- Smith machine
- Barbells and weight plates
- Benches and various height boxes
- Cardio equipment including cycle ergometers and treadmills
- Pilates reformers, trapeze table and multi-chair with adjustable spring-loaded resistance
- Balance rails and equipment such as foam pads and beams
- Bosu balls and exercise balls
- Resistance bands and loops
- Accessory equipment including foam rollers and exercise mats
We also offer Supervised Exercise Physiology Group Classes in the clinic gym, run at various
times throughout the week, giving you flexibility to work around your schedule.
What are the Exercise Physiology Group Classes?
Exercise Physiology Group Classes offer an opportunity to complete exercise in a supervised
environment, giving you access to utilise the equipment in a safe, flexible, and social
environment. These group classes can host up to 8 people at a time, and run for 60 minutes.
Your program is individualised to your needs, goals, and health conditions, and is designed
and delivered by an Exercise Physiologist, and will typically involve using a range of different
equipment and forms of exercise.
What would a home-based exercise program typically involve?
This depends on your goals and treatment plan, as well as the equipment you have at home,
or if you have access to a gym. However, Exercise Physiologists design an exercise program
that fits into your schedule, goals, interests and any equipment you have available. The
home-based programs are prescribed using an app called “MoveHealth” which contains
written instructions and videos on how to complete the exercises, as well as ability to track
your progress and provide feedback to your practitioner on how you are going with the
exercises. We typically recommend that we regularly complete a 1:1 subsequent
appointment to update the exercise program and ensure that you are progressing to meet
your goals.
Whether you are an elite athlete aiming to improve performance, a generally healthy
